Peridot has a hardness of 6.5-7. The density is about 3.32-3.35 g/cm3. It has strong birefringence with indexes of about n a 1.654, nu 1.690. It has indistinct prismatic cleavage and often, conchoidal fracture.

The island of Zebirget supplies excellent Peridot. Others come from the United States (Arinona), the Hawaiian Islands, Burma and Brazil.
