| 1. Physical Properties:
|
| Opal has a hardness
of 5.5 to 6.5 and very low density from about 1.98 to
2.20 g/cm3, depending on the water content. The Refractive
Index varies from 1.44 to 1.46 or a little more. It is
singly refractive. It may be somewhat porous, in which
case it is dangerous to immense it in liquids other than
water. |

| 2. Occurrence: |
| Most of Opal comes from
Australia. Other sources are Mexico and to a lesser extent,
Guatemala and Honduras. Opal is also found in United States
and Iceland. |

| 3. Appearance: |
| It is an opaque stone
which has a see through surface and minute tinges of colours
in it which gives it its famous firing. |

| 4. Uses: |
| This gem is said to
bestow beauty, power and financial prosperity, good for
those engaged in business connected with travel, tourism
and import/export. It is an excellent gem for those born
in the month of October as it turns them more loving and
affectionate in personal and family life. This improves
intuition and helps magnetize others. It also helps in
