2.61 g/cm3 and hardness about 6.5. It has only one refractive
index about 1.53. |

| 2. Occurrence : |
| It comes from Uruguay
and the bordering regions of Brazil. It is also found
in Germany, Brazil, Soviet Union, United States and Canada. |

| 3. Appearance: |
| Onyx is hard, tough
and durable. Different shades of onyx are available like
red, blue, green, yellow, black and white. It is ideal
for carving and engraving, fashioning into beads, spheres
and bowls and for making paper weights, pen holders, book
ends and boxes. It is also used in inexpensive jewellery.
It is also used for stone inlay work. Onyx with its consecutive
layers of different colours make excellent material for
cameos. Some variegated pieces are used for the carving
of multi-coloured figurines. |

| Used instead of Emerald.
