Its name comes from Greek 'esson' meaning 'inferior'. As these gems are regarded to be less valuable.
1. Physical Properties :
This is a Gem of garnet family. Magnets can pull these Gems which is a very special phenomenon, as magnets otherwise pull only certain metals. Chemically it is known as Grossular (3CaO.Al2O3.3SiO2). It is found in number of colours like green and pink but generally it is orange brown. It has a hardness of 7.25 on the Moh's Scale, specific gravity is 3.65 and Refractive Index is 1.74.

It is available in abundance. It is found in India, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Australia, Tanzania, South Africa, Burma, Mexico, Russia, Italy, Kenya, Canada, U.S.A, and Malaysia.

3. Identification :
This Gem contains inclusions which look like scattered islands or flat bubbles. The colour is like honey shining under a ray of light. The inside, when viewed under magnification looks like a thick sticky liquid and certain areas look out of shape with lesser transparency.
 
4. Healing Power of a Gomedh :
The Gomedh is traditionally used in India to strengthen the digestive system and remove stomach problems .
The colour of this gem which is a mixture of red and yellow looks like Go mutra which is said to have special healing effect as per Ayurveda and is used throughout India specially in the rural area . This gem removes the malefic effects of Rahu which gives high level of stress and thus leads to irritability and spoils the calm of the person and his relations with the fellow beings . This gem also is given as donation to flowing water because that is considered to be the highest form of donation and reduces the malefic effects of Rahu .
Donations are sometimes more beneficial for removing the ill effect of Rahu than even wearing this gem .
