| 1. Physical & Chemical
Properties: |
| Garnets are complex
silicates. It has a hardness of about 6½-7½ on the Moh's
scale. The density ranges from 3.65-4.20 g/cm3. The refractive
index is about 1.73-1.83. |

| 2. Appearance: |
| The colour of garnet
is mostly reddish brown but it can be red, light red,
violet, purple etc. Garnets are usually semi-opaque but
can be transparent and limpid with highly lustrous faces.
They have no cleavage. It can be made into Cabochons or
faceted with an oval or mixed cut. Garnets are widely
used in Jewellery and as strings. It is also the birthstone
for people born in January. |

| Garnet comes from Bohemia,
South Africa, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, the United States, Mexico,
Brazil, Argentina and Australia. |

| 4. Uses: |
| It gives relaxation
and relieves tensions. The ancient Egyptians used garnet
as an antidote for snake bites and food poisoning. It
is good for people having birth numbers 4 or 8. It is
very useful for females having delicate health and who
suffer from body pains, headaches etc. The use of this
gem ensures long, fruitful and uninterrupted professional
life. This helps in prosperity by facilitating gradual
accumulation of wealth. |
