Coral
 
1. Physical Properties :
Coral is a product of sea. It is formed from the calcareous skeletons of myriads of tiny polyps (which means insect with many feet) which live in vast colonies in warm waters at a moderate depth. It is composed chiefly of calcium carbonate. This is found arranged as fibres radiating from the central axis of the curving coral branches. Its specific Gravity is 2.68 and hardness is less than 4 on the Moh's scale. It is an opaque stone.
Many forms of coral exist but only high quality Red, Pink, Blue, Black and white corals are used in jewellery.
 
2. Occurrence :
Corals are found in India, Italy, Australia, Sri Lanka, Japan, Malaysia, South, Africa, Algeria and U.S.A.
In India corals are found at number of places around the coast. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the Lakshadweep are coral islands and corals are found all around them.
 
3. Identification :
Coral, being an opaque gem it is very difficult to identify. A lot of eye practice is required to differentiate between a natural and a man made coral. Natural corals, if seen under magnification always talks the story of their origin. They have black marks which are actually holes. A very careful examination is required to identify a natural coral. As real corals are not very clear and if clear they are very costly. Manmade corals are very commonly found in the market places being sold as real corals.
 
4. Healing Power of a Coral
Though coral looks reddish to the ordinary eye it is yellow under the prism. The coral therefore is a mine of yellow rays. Yellow colour nourishes the marrow system, the head and the genitals. It releases hot yellow rays which melts the thick lymph in the flesh system which often lead to rheumatism.
Yellow rays help in fighting diseases like stomach troubles, indigestion, constipation, liver troubles, diabetes, eczema, skin troubles, leprosy and nervous exhaustion. Yellow rays can remove extreme forms of mental depression also.
Ayurveda, the ancient Indian scripture dealing with medicine, tells about a number of uses of coral ash and coral powder (izoyHkLe rFkk izokyfi'Vh). The coral ash can remove Kapha (matter) and Pitta (fibre) diseases. It enhances strength and beauty of the body especially skin luster.
Coral ash can also be helpful in loss of appetite, indigestion, fevers, effects of poisons, insanity, anaemia, jaundice, asthma, obesity, eye troubles, urinary diseases and rickets.
In astrology if Mars is weak or afflicted then coral is recommended. The Gem should be worn in such a fashion that it touches the skin.
When Mars is afflicted, then it leads to liver diseases, Impure blood, measles, small-pox, high blood pressure, anaemia, ulcer, boils, ringmorms, piles, blood dysentery, urine problems, sexual diseases. Coral improves the working stamina and strength to fight the problems of life and makes the person brave and strong both physically and emotionally.
Yellow cosmic rays which are found in abundance in the coral has a stimulating effect on the nerve, it helps in building and maintaining strong and healthy tissues, organs and bones. The yellow cosmic rays leads to cementing effect on the muscles and tissues of the body which reduces the sagging effect in particular and gives a youthful look in general.
The effect of yellow cosmic rays of coral has been very effectively used to cure the problems due to ageing. This has worked wonders for improving the sexual desire and performance.
